Pros: Offered with gas or hybrid powertrains, RWD or AWD, all models provide solid handling and a spacious cabin. The Ford Explorer Hybrid delivers strong fuel economy with little penalty in towing capacity.
Cons: Interiors come with cheap-feeling materials. Fuel economy is below average for gas Explorers.

Pros: Strong acceleration, a smooth ride, and precise steering make the Honda Pilot pleasant to drive. There’s plenty of space inside the cabin, and third-row access is easy. Standard tech updates for the 2022 model included the larger 8.0-inch touchscreen (replacing a 5.0-inch base display), LED headlights, and three-zone climate control.
Cons: The Pilot’s nine-speed automatic transmission occasionally delivers a rough shift. Interior design feels somewhat old. This year’s new TrailSport off-road trim is more show than go.

2022–2023 Hyundai Palisade
Pros: As one of the best used three-row SUVs, the Palisade benefits from a strong, smooth powertrain, direct steering, and a quiet cabin. Interior packaging is good, too. A more premium-looking exterior arrives for 2023 to go with the Hyundai Palisade’s already high-end interior materials. This version also gets a more powerful wireless charging pad. Regardless of model year, it’s an excellent value for the money.
Cons: A flinty ride and uncomfortable seating are considerations to keep in mind, though for 2023 the Palisade received updated front seats. The third row is cramped for all but little kids. The button-heavy center console seems from a bygone era.
