A three-row SUV might be the perfect vehicle for a small to average-sized family, but new models don’t come cheaply. Many can cost upwards of $40,000, and never mind luxury SUVs, which are simply out of reach for some shoppers. It’s no wonder buyers look to the used market, but even that requires shrewdness. To make the search easier, we’ve vetted the best used three-row SUVs for safety, reliability, quality, drivability, and livability.

About MotorTrend‘s methodology: We consider many of the same factors in our new-car rankings system. Our research focused on 3–5-year-old vehicles, which means our picks start at the 2021 model year. An above-average J.D. Powerquality and reliability rating is a plus. Any vehicle we recommend must have earned an IIHSTop Safety Pick award or NHTSAoverall five-star safety rating and have some used-car inventory with under 80,000 miles (the upper limit on many automaker CPO programs).

2021 Chevrolet Traverse
Pros: A spacious cabin is this Traverse’s strongest feature. It comes with a third row that can accommodate adult passengers comfortably, unusual for most three-row midsize SUVs. A strong, smooth V-6 and direct steering are also strengths.
Cons: It lacks polish. Cornering unlocks too much body roll. Uninspired styling and an abundance of hard plastic undermine cabin refinement. Active safety technology isn’t offered on lower trims.
