1. Audi A5

Best for: tech heads
The last of the ‘big three’ German luxury brands, Audi’s A4 may not be quite as fresh as the more recently released BMW and Mercedes, but it’s still an excellent executive car nonetheless.
With excellent interior design and quality, plus all the tech you’re likely to need, the A4 is a refined executive car, and a consummate all-rounder, and it also looks rather attractively priced next to its BMW and Mercedes rivals.
2. Mercedes C-Class

Best for: luxury and comfort
You can trust the company that invented the motor car to field a decent competitor to the 3 Series, and you’d be right to do so: the latest Mercedes C-Class offers a masterclass in luxurious, effortless comfort.
While its boot is a little smaller than the BMW’s and the large central infotainment screen won’t be to all tastes, it really is an excellent car that will make you feel special each time you open the door and climb aboard.
3. Volkswagen ID7

Best for: going electric with class
The more natural alternative to the BMW 3 Series would be the Volkswagen Passat but, frankly, the new Skoda Superb (below) is mechanically similar and a better car than the latest version. The VW ID7, on the other hand, is a different kettle of fish – it’s a big, classy electric car with a standout range.
Some models can go more than 400 miles on a single charge, making them ideal for the sort of high-mileage drivers who may previously have bought BMW 3 Series diesels. The ID7 is surprisingly good value, too, and very practical thanks to its hatchback boot.
4. BMW X3

Best for: BMW buyers who want an SUV
So you like the 3 Series but it’s just not practical enough for you or your family – and the Touring estate doesn’t suit either. Well, why not keep it in the family with the latest BMW X3?
The X3 comes with the same petrol or plug-in hybrid engines as the 3 Series but is also available as a diesel – all models have a taller, more practical interior than the equivalent 3 Series. Material quality isn’t as good as perhaps you’d hope for the price, but it’s great to drive.
